“The Son of Man did come not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
What an amazing statement that is. The Lord Jesus is the one at the top of the org chart. He is the King of the cosmic Hill. He is the Lord of all. There is no one higher. And no one came lower.
He served His people in the most stunning of ways. By enduring crucifixion. By emptying the cup of wrath. By putting away sin. By providing atonement. By conquering death. By removing its sting. By giving robes of righteousness. By loving sinners in desperate need of grace.
We serve the God who continues to serve His people with tender care.
When we receive the Lord’s Supper, Jesus is providing. “This is my body, broken for you.” “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood, shed for you.” When the church gathers to hear God’s Word, Jesus is speaking through the Scriptures. “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly.” The Lord is present to strengthen, to help, to humble, to encourage, to convict, to console.
We love God because He first loved us. We serve God because He first served us. He loves us still. More than we can know. He serves us still. In ways we are not even aware. How can we not serve God and others in the way Jesus exemplified and now empowers by His Spirit?
The Spirit of Jesus teaches us how to dress as servant-hearted ambassadors of Christ.
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 3:12-14.
Each day you can serve God and His people by dressing in this way. The Lord is laying out the articles on your bed each morning. Put them on carefully and deliberately. You’re representing the Kingdom of Light.
